In Hindsight, Portals Can Be Very Dangerous

Summary

Rynn’s story answers a simple question: why not sell your soul to an all-powerful extraplanar being?  So what if becoming a warlock wasn’t exactly on their bucket list?  After years of trying and failing to cast even the simplest spell via conventional methods, Rynn was met with an offer they literally could not refuse: limitless power with lots of strings attached, or certain death.

Ever since they were a child, Rynn had been obsessed with magic.  In the world of Elysi’ix, where pulley systems are considered advanced technology, plenty of children are drawn to the wonders that magic can achieve, but eventually, most of them are put off by its rigorous complexity or the expensive schooling required to train as a practitioner of the arcane arts.

Neither of these factors stopped Rynn.  Money was no object for the sole heir of the Dim’Kharlil family, and they’d always excelled at academics, so  it was no surprise when their application to the Academy of the Arcane Arts was immediately accepted..  However, what did come as a surprise was the difficulty Rynn had casting their first spells.

They recited the incantations perfectly, performed the correct series of movements and gestures, and used the correct components; yet when the spell released, it sort of… sputtered.  Despite their rigorous training and attention to detail, they simply didn’t seem to possess an innate connection to magic.

This didn’t dissuade them from continuing their studies, but eight years of work with minimal results isn’t exactly encouraging, and a shortcut started sounding really good.  That’s where our story begins.
